I don’t know about you, but my Tik Tok FYP has several sprinkles of the “Very mindful, very demure” trend, and I often giggle when seeing these videos poking fun at behavior that is usually not mindful or demure. I love this trend, and I am not afraid to admit it. But what I love about it is that it has brought up mindfulness. And I love the idea of the subtle reminder to be mindful, even while attempting to mindlessly unplug and scroll our FYP. Did you see what I did there? Very mindful, very demure!
So, what exactly is mindfulness, and how can this improve our well-being? Well, mindfulness is a focus or awareness of something. Practicing this mindfulness in different aspects of our lives leads to a calmer and more accepting nature and a true connection to your body by acknowledging the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that you feel in your body. Notice I said acknowledgment and not alignment. There is a careful balance when it comes to being mindful and not allowing your thoughts, feelings, or sensations to rule your day. This will enable you to live in the present moment and not let a moment of your day throw everything off to the point that you don’t recover.
I can think of several examples of how mindfulness can increase resilience. We can all relate to trying to improve our diet, and suddenly, something unexpected comes and tempts us. Imagine you are at the office and have hit your nutrition goals for three days. You have been proactive and packed your lunch, skipped the Dutch Bros drive-through on your way in, and skipped dessert. Yay. But this morning, someone wanted to be kind and randomly brought in donuts, and the smell wafted through the office, and you couldn’t resist. So, you grab a donut and walk back to your desk, but before you even realize it, the donut is gone. There are a couple of crumbs on the napkin, and you have sticky fingers, but no donut can be found. Spoiler alert- you are it and did not even blink! So- what do you do now? Do you recognize that you ate the donut and this was a momentary detour from your nutrition goals, or do you think, “Welp- there goes the rest of my week, so I am going to order in a whole pizza for lunch”?
Being mindful and recognizing that your donut was just that, a donut will help you stay on track with your overall goals. Acknowledging the moment for what it is and not letting it derail the rest of your day, week or even your overall goals. But how do you stop the intrusive thoughts from derailing you in this moment? What do you do to acknowledge the moment without living in it for longer than it actually exists? I want to share my favorite quick reset tip with you to help you transition out of sitting in this moment and into navigating the rest of your day.
Mindfulness Box Breathing- (do it with me as you read this- nobody is looking, I promise!)
So, how do you feel now? Did you feel that tension leave your shoulders? Did your jaw unclench a little? I know mine did! My mind is a little less foggy than before my box breathing. What did you notice? Did you see that this regulated your breathing? Do you feel more calm and capable of taking on your next task? Doing breathing exercises and noticing sensations and thought changes is a quick and easy way to build the habit of practicing mindfulness. And when we make a habit of practicing mindfulness activities, we become more mindful and that supports the resiliency that we all need to navigate this world!
